The First Few Seconds: Clearing the Decks
The moment power is cut, your router's RAM is wiped completely. RAM — RAM — is the fast, temporary workspace where your router stores active data: the list of connected devices, the routes packets should take, and a running log of network activity. None of that survives a power cut, which is exactly the point.
This memory flush matters because routers develop what software engineers call memory leaks over time. A memory leak happens when a program claims memory for a task but never releases it when the task is done. Over days or weeks, these unclaimed chunks pile up until the router is starved for working space — and your connection becomes sluggish or unstable. Pulling the plug is the simplest way to reclaim it all at once.
Restart vs. Reset: A Critical Distinction
The terms 'restart' and 'reset' are often used interchangeably in everyday conversation, but they mean very different things on a router. A restart (reboot) only clears temporary memory and leaves all your settings intact. A factory reset erases everything — including your Wi-Fi name and password — and should only be done intentionally. When in doubt, restart first.
Booting Up: More Than Just Turning On
Once power returns, your router doesn't just switch on — it runs through a structured startup sequence, much like a computer. The firmware (the permanent software baked into the router's chip) loads first, then initializes the hardware: the processor, the wireless radios, and the Ethernet ports.
Next, the router rebuilds its ARP table — the Address Resolution Protocol table — which maps each device's IP address to its unique hardware identifier (called a MAC address). A bloated or corrupted ARP table is one of the stealthiest causes of dropped connections and slow performance, and a reboot clears it entirely.

One of the most consequential things a restart does happens outside your home network entirely. Your router must re-establish its connection with your internet service provider (ISP) and request a fresh IP address through a process called a DHCP handshake.
DHCP stands for Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol. Your ISP's server temporarily assigns your router a public IP address — the address the wider internet uses to find your home — under a timed lease. When your router reboots, it broadcasts a request for a new lease. This same process also resets your router's connection to the ISP's DNS servers, which are the systems that translate web addresses (like a site's domain name) into numerical IP addresses computers can reach. A stale or broken DNS cache can make pages load slowly or fail to load at all — and a reboot clears it.
What Stays Put — and What Doesn't
Understanding what a restart preserves is just as useful as understanding what it clears. Your router stores two different types of information in two different types of memory:
- Volatile memory (RAM): Cleared on every reboot. Includes active device connections, routing tables, ARP tables, DNS cache, and session data.
- Non-volatile memory (flash storage): Survives reboots. Includes your Wi-Fi network name (SSID), password, port forwarding rules, parental controls, and all other saved settings.
This distinction also explains why a restart is very different from a factory reset. A factory reset deliberately erases non-volatile memory too, returning the router to its original out-of-box state. Unless you're deliberately wiping a misconfigured device, a standard reboot is all most situations call for.
