Core Vaccines: The Non-Negotiables
Veterinary organizations divide vaccines into two categories — core and non-core — and understanding this distinction is the foundation of any vaccination conversation. Core vaccines are recommended for virtually every dog or cat because the diseases they target are either highly contagious, potentially fatal, or transmissible to people.
Core vaccine
A vaccine recommended for all pets of a given species regardless of lifestyle or location, because the diseases it prevents are widespread, severe, or transmissible to humans. Examples include rabies and distemper.
Non-core (lifestyle) vaccine
A vaccine recommended based on an individual pet's risk factors — such as geographic location, exposure to other animals, or outdoor access. Your vet helps determine which apply to your pet.
Booster
A follow-up dose of a vaccine given after the initial series to maintain or strengthen immunity over time. Booster frequency varies by vaccine and individual animal.
Titer test
A blood test that measures the level of antibodies in a pet's bloodstream, sometimes used to assess whether immunity from a prior vaccination is still protective.
Puppy/kitten series
A sequence of vaccines given at intervals during early development, typically starting around 6–8 weeks of age, to build initial immunity before maternal antibodies fade.
Zoonotic disease
A disease that can be transmitted between animals and humans. Rabies is a well-known example and is why rabies vaccination is legally required in most U.S. states.
For dogs, core vaccines include protection against rabies, canine distemper, parvovirus, and adenovirus (which causes infectious canine hepatitis). These are often delivered as a combination injection abbreviated as DHPP or DA2PP.
For cats, core vaccines cover rabies, feline herpesvirus-1 (rhinotracheitis), calicivirus, and panleukopenia — commonly combined as the FVRCP vaccine.
Rabies deserves special mention: it is the only pet vaccine mandated by law across most of the United States. Requirements around booster frequency and which species must be vaccinated vary by state and municipality, so check your local regulations or ask your veterinarian.

A typical puppy schedule might look like this:
- 6–8 weeks: First DHPP combination dose

- 12–16 months: Booster doses to solidify adult immunity
Kitten schedules follow a similar pattern, generally starting FVRCP at 6–8 weeks and administering rabies between 8 and 16 weeks depending on the product and local law.

Some pet owners ask about titer testing — blood tests that measure antibody levels — as an alternative to automatic re-vaccination. Titers can provide useful information, but they have limitations: a measurable antibody level does not always confirm full protection, and titer tests do not replace legally mandated rabies vaccines.
