Fleas: Small Insects, Large Impact
Fleas are the most common external parasite affecting companion animals in the United States. The cat flea (Ctenocephalides felis) is paradoxically named — it infests both dogs and cats with equal frequency. Adult fleas feed on blood, causing itching, skin irritation, and in heavy infestations, anemia. Some pets develop flea allergy dermatitis, an immune reaction to flea saliva that causes intense scratching even from a single bite.
Fleas also serve as intermediate hosts for tapeworms. When a pet grooms itself and inadvertently swallows an infected flea, a tapeworm infection can follow.

Ticks: Vectors for Serious Disease
Ticks are arachnids, not insects, and several species in the U.S. are capable of transmitting disease to pets and people alike. Common tick-borne illnesses in dogs include Lyme disease (caused by Borrelia burgdorferi), anaplasmosis, ehrlichiosis, and Rocky Mountain spotted fever. Cats are generally more resistant to tick-borne infections, but they can still carry ticks into the home.
Ticks feed by attaching to a host and drawing blood over several days. Disease transmission typically requires the tick to be attached for a minimum period — often more than 24 hours for Lyme disease — which is why prompt removal matters. A thorough tick check after outdoor activity is a simple but important habit.
Parasites Are a Year-Round Concern
Many pet owners associate parasites with warm weather, but the Companion Animal Parasite Council recommends year-round prevention in most regions of the United States. Mild winters and heated indoor environments allow flea eggs to survive through colder months, and heartworm-carrying mosquitoes can remain active during unseasonably warm periods. Heartworm: A Preventable but Serious Threat
Heartworm disease is caused by Dirofilaria immitis, a parasitic worm transmitted exclusively through the bite of an infected mosquito. After transmission, larvae migrate through the bloodstream and develop into adult worms residing in the heart and pulmonary arteries. In dogs, adult worms can reach 12 inches in length; significant infestations cause coughing, exercise intolerance, and potentially fatal heart and lung damage.
Cats respond differently — even a small number of worms can trigger severe respiratory symptoms sometimes called heartworm-associated respiratory disease (HARD). Importantly, there is currently no approved treatment for heartworm infection in cats, making prevention the only reliable strategy for felines.

Intestinal Worms: Common and Often Asymptomatic
Several types of intestinal worms commonly affect dogs and cats. Roundworms (Toxocara species) are among the most widespread, transmitted through ingestion of contaminated soil, feces, or infected prey animals. Puppies and kittens can acquire roundworms before birth or through nursing. Hookworms attach to the intestinal lining and consume blood, causing anemia, particularly in young animals. Whipworms primarily affect dogs and can cause chronic large-bowel diarrhea. Tapeworms are transmitted through flea ingestion or, in some species, through hunting infected prey.
Many intestinal worm infections produce few obvious signs, especially in adult pets, which is why fecal testing during routine veterinary exams is important. Roundworms and hookworms are also zoonotic — humans, particularly children, can be exposed through contact with contaminated soil.
